On December 30, 2019, the FDA announced a recall of Sportmix pet food products manufactured by Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. that may contain potentially fatal levels of aflatoxin. The FDA reports of at least 28 deaths and 8 illnesses in dogs that ate the products. Aflatoxin is a toxin produced by the mold Aspergillus flavus, which can grow on corn and other grains used in pet food. The FDA cautions pet owners to stop feeding the pet food immediately. Andersen Sleater Sianni attorneys represent pet owners who may have purchased pet foods that do not disclose potential health risks or make other misrepresentations.
